Dolostone aka Hokie™Stone

Dolostones are diagenetic, and/or possibly sedimentary, rocks. This rock is a sedimentary carbonate rock that contains a high percentage of the mineral dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2. Colors - white, gray, tan, reddish, bluish, greenish, brownish H. 3½ - 4 S.G.1.8-2.85 Hokie™ Stone is from the Chepultepec and Kingsport dolomite which cwas fromed when continental drift forced the coastal plains of Africa and North America to collide, creating wrinkled layers of faults and folds. These layers were pushed towards the earth’s surface, where they formed the stone that distinguishes Virginia Tech today.
